As a result of the negotiations, First Class firefighters will receive a salary of $99,125 as of January 1, 2018 and increase each year. In the fifth year of the agreement, the base salary of a first-rate firefighter increased to $106,809. In 2018, firefighters with the Guelph Fire Department also received an additional retroactive payment from the old collective agreement. This retroactive compensation has led to a higher than average end of the usual number of firefighters on the sunshine list of public sector employees, who paid $100,000 or more in 2018. A collective agreement between the city and the Guelph Professional Fire Fighters Association (GPFFA) expired on December 31, 2017. Since then, both sides have been working to reach a new agreement. On March 18, an interest rate arbitration proceeding between the two parties was concluded. Clack said there were currently no plans to reduce the level of service or the number of firefighters employed by the city. In budget 2019, the city provided $42 million for the Guelph Police Service and $26.5 million for the Guelph Department of Fire. Of the $26.5 million in the firefighters` budget, more than $25 million is spent on salaries, salaries and social benefits. „There is no intention on our part to reduce the number of firefighters we have, it is not something that is being considered,” Clack said.
July 2017, the base salary of a first-class firefighter was 97,290 $US. Clack said the increase in base wages is largely due to the fact that they are able to track similar increases in other municipalities. According to Clack, one of the challenges of the last round of negotiations is to be competitive with the increase in salaries of other firefighters across the province. In the decision, the arbitrators cited negotiated comparisons in Cambridge, Mississauga and Barrie. Clack said the city`s reimbursement to firefighters in retroactive payment was expected and awarded in the 2019 budget. At the end of each month, the work program updates a list of collective agreements expiring this year, which include 500 or more employees in provincial regions and 100 or more employees in federal jurisdiction.
